New Magic Wand missile defense system could be ready this year
TEL AVIV — Israel has accelerated a key missile defense project.
A senior official said the Israeli Defense Ministry has been working to speed up Magic Wand, a missile and rocket defense system. The official said the first full system tests were expected in 2011 and Magic Wand could become operational soon after.
“Over the next few months we will be conducting full-system test runs and we may declare Magic Wand fully operational in the very near future,” Pinchas Yungman, who heads the project for Israel’s state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, said.
Addressing a military aviation conference on May 31, Yungman, a reserve colonel, said Magic Wand could become part of Israel’s multi-layered missile defense system by 2013.
